![]() ![]() One year ago, I sulked neath the sour grapes of VR, impatient with its promises and its tepid – if not often unattainable – arrival (I was awaiting PSVR, which was in exasperatingly short supply at the time). The individual puzzles are enjoyable enough, but The Talos Principle’s excellence arises from a narrative that membranes those puzzles together: a tale thematically interrogative of the giants who shoulder progress of what, perhaps, such progress would even entail, especially if neither its failure nor success should resolve the ever-encroaching boundaries of inexistence and the definition – or lack thereof – of consciousness (albeit being a bit too semantically-minded on this latter subject, perhaps). Halfway through and it’d usurped Portal 2’s seat as the best puzzle game I’d ever played full-way through and it’d entered into contention for one the best games I’d ever played, regardless of genre. Two years ago, it finally landed on PS4, and through brute brilliance succeeded in justifying that jealousy, as well as the wait. Three years ago, I sighed tiredly waiting for The Talos Principle to migrate onto console, eyeing its PC release with envy, and doubting that its eventual port would justify the jealousy I’d extended to it. I’m positive near nobody ever reads these unprompted reviews, but, because of my love for The Talos Principle, and more importantly because of my having been hypnotized by the power of VR, I hope that the following might convince at least one person to contemplate trying what I consider was, for me, a tremendous game. Needless to say, this is a game I'll be keeping an eye out for. The Talos Principle is one of the best puzzlers I've ever played, and its excellence is summed up well in our review of the game at launch by contributor Stace Harman. There'll also be multiple endings in The Talos Principle 2, as there were in the first game. Puzzle mechanics from the original such as directing lasers are back, with some new twists including gravity manipulation and mind transference. The player will be tasked with investigating a "mysterious megastructure", while also being presented with philosophical questions on "the nature of the cosmos, faith versus reason, and the fear of repeating humankind's mistakes". The sequel sees the android wake up in the real world, where humans have long been extinct. The story of The Talos Principle 2 picks up from where the original left off, where the player-character, an android, manages to demonstrate free will and intelligence and escapes the virtual world they were trapped in. ![]() The sequel was first announced in 2016, developer Alen Ladavac sneakily slipped the news in at the end of his talk at that year's Nordic Game conference. The Talos Principle first came out in 2014 on PC, and was followed up with DLC called Road to Gehenna and ports to Xbox One, PS4, Switch and mobile. An official reveal of The Talos Principle 2 was one of the many announcements during last night's PlayStation Showcase. ![]()
